Getting Started
What is GearBro?
GearBro is an iOS app for automatic sports equipment tracking. It connects to Apple HealthKit to import your workouts and lets you assign gear to each session. The app tracks gear condition, usage statistics, goals, streaks, and more — all stored locally on your device. No account required.
How do I set up HealthKit integration?
When you first open GearBro, it asks for permission to read your HealthKit workout data. To grant access:
- Tap "Allow" when prompted, or go to Settings > Health > Data Access & Devices > GearBro on your iPhone.
- Make sure all workout data types are enabled (workout type, duration, distance, calories).
- GearBro will automatically import your last 90 days of workouts on the first sync.
If workouts are not appearing, check that:
- HealthKit permissions are enabled for GearBro in your iPhone Settings.
- You have workouts recorded in the Health app (from Apple Watch, iPhone, or a compatible third-party app).
- You have restarted the app after granting permissions.
GearBro reads HealthKit data in read-only mode. It never writes to or modifies your health data.
What is Multi-Gear Assignment?
Multi-Gear Assignment is GearBro's unique feature. Unlike other tracking apps that only let you link one item per workout, GearBro lets you assign multiple gear items to a single workout. For example, for a trail run you can assign your Running Shoes, your Rain Jacket, and your GPS Watch — all to the same session. Each item's usage stats (distance, time, sessions) are updated independently. This gives you a complete picture of how all your equipment is being used.
Features & Usage
What sports and gear types are supported?
GearBro supports 16 workout types: Running, Cycling, Swimming, Hiking, Walking, Skiing, Rowing, Yoga, Gym, Climbing, Strength Training, Tennis, Martial Arts, Dance, Soccer, and Other.
For gear, there are 14 categories: Running Shoes, Hiking Shoes, Bike, Swim Gear, Ski Equipment, Climbing Gear, Gym Equipment, Clothing, Electronics, Tennis, Martial Arts, Dance, Soccer, and Other. Any workout recorded in HealthKit that matches a supported type will be imported automatically.
How does gear condition tracking work?
GearBro estimates your gear's condition based on usage data: distance covered, number of sessions, and total active time. The condition score is calculated using general wear assumptions for each gear category.
Important
Condition scores are estimates, not safety assessments. They do not evaluate structural integrity or fitness for use. Always physically inspect your equipment before use, especially safety-critical items like climbing gear, helmets, and bike components. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for replacement.
What are Gear Personalities?
GearBro assigns one of 68 fun personalities to each gear item based on its usage patterns. Personalities are determined by factors like workout frequency, distance, consistency, and variety. They update as your usage evolves. Gear Personalities are a free feature — available to all users.
How do Goals and Streaks work?
You can set weekly usage goals for your gear (for example, "run at least 3 times per week with these shoes"). When you hit your goal consistently, you build a streak. Streaks progress through milestone colors: Gray, Orange, Red, Purple, and Gold. Free users can create up to 3 goals. Premium users get unlimited goals.
What are Maintenance Alerts?
GearBro includes 35 category-specific maintenance milestones that trigger automatically based on your real usage data. For example, running shoes get a "First Check" at 300 km, bikes get a "Chain Check" at 2,000 km, and climbing gear gets a "Safety Check" at 50 sessions.
When a milestone is reached, you see it in your gear's detail view and receive a notification. You can mark milestones as done after completing the check.
Maintenance Alerts are a free feature available to all users — safety reminders should never be behind a paywall.
What is Component Tracking?
Component Tracking lets you monitor wear on individual sub-parts of your gear — like the chain, tires, or brake pads on a bike. Each component has its own usage counter that increments automatically when you log workouts.
When a component reaches the end of its lifespan, you can "Replace" it to reset its counter while keeping the replacement history. This is available for gear categories with meaningful replaceable parts: Bike, Ski Equipment, Climbing Gear, Electronics, Gym Equipment, Tennis, and Martial Arts.
Component Tracking is a Premium feature.
How does Maintenance Cost Tracking work?
With Maintenance Cost Tracking, you can log service costs, repairs, and replacement parts for each gear item. Each entry records the date, description, and cost in your preferred currency.
These costs are added to your total investment, which feeds into the Value Tracker's break-even analysis. This gives you a true picture of what your gear costs over its lifetime — not just the purchase price.
Adding costs is a Premium feature. Viewing maintenance milestones remains free.
Data & Privacy
Does GearBro work offline?
Yes. GearBro stores all data locally on your device and does not require an internet connection for its core features. You can add gear, view stats, log journal entries, and browse analytics completely offline. An internet connection is only needed for initial HealthKit sync of new workouts, weather data retrieval, subscription verification, and anonymous analytics signals sent in the background.
How do I export my data?
GearBro supports full data export in JSON format. Go to Settings > Export Data in the app. This exports all your gear profiles, workout assignments, goals, journal entries, and usage statistics as a single JSON file. You can share or save this file using the iOS share sheet.
We recommend exporting regularly as a backup, since all data is stored locally and cannot be recovered if your device is lost or the app is deleted.
Is my data private?
Yes. GearBro is designed with privacy at its core:
- All data is stored locally on your device. No cloud sync, no server storage.
- No account or login required.
- HealthKit data is read-only and never shared with anyone.
- No personal identifiers are collected.
- Anonymous analytics and crash reporting collect no personal information.
